Top Healthcare Technology Companies To Watch For 2015

General Motors now says the first sign of the ignition switch problem that led to its massive recall last month came in 2001 during development of the 2003 Saturn Ion.

GM made the disclosure in an update of its recall chronology filed with federal regulators and posted late Wednesday.

The document is an amendment to the time line that GM filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month.

GM OFFER: Loaner cars, $500 discounts on new GM cars

The company says that it only now is reporting the 2001 incident because it only discovered a record of it last month.. After an initial recall, GM looked into other cars that used the same switch and then more than doubled the number of models and cars recalled, including the 2003 Ion, which is the earliest vehicle in the recall.

With alternatives, it's a two part process in which the first is simply qualification and then the second is measuring the material benefit for your portfolio. The necessary condition is uncorrelated, or non-systemic, returns. Without this, the investor is better off simply selecting a traditional long-only fund with the highest risk-adjusted prospects. The next big thing in treating hepatitis-C
The other currently experimental therapy very likely to make it onto the FDA's desk before the midpoint of 2014 is AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV  ) direct-acting antiviral combo drug. In similar fashion to Sovaldi, this DAA-combo therapy, which includes ABT-450 from Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) , is running six confirmatory late-stage trials on various genotypes. There are, however, two primary differences between AbbVie's DAA-combo therapy and Sovaldi.

  • [By George Budwell]

Normally, such strong efficacy results would be hailed as a major achievement. However, these results are actually less impressive than those by competing drug's developed by AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV  ) , Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) and Gilead. Bristol-Myers' therapy also has a treatment duration double that of Gilead's drug Sovaldi for genotype 1 patients. So, while these results are impressive in their own right, the therapy's commercial prospects may be limited due to the presence of superior competitors in the market.

Simon Dawson/Bloomberg via Getty Images TORONTO -- BlackBerry reported a quarterly loss of nearly $1 billion Friday, in line with last week's warning, days after accepting its largest shareholder's tentative $4.7 billion bid to take it out of the public eye. BlackBerry (BBRY), which had warned of poor results on Sept. 20, said its net loss for the second quarter ended on Aug. 31 was $965 million, or $1.84 a share. Revenue fell 45 percent to $1.6 billion from a year earlier. The loss included a writedown of about $934 million for unsold Z10 phones, a touchscreen model that the company had hoped would reverse its fading fortunes. The phone has sold badly with business and consumer customers alike. "This write-off is very real," said Morningstar (MORN) analyst Brian Colello. "They bought a lot of inventory hoping to sell it. The auditors were not convinced that BlackBerry can sell it or sell it at prices that the company was hoping for. We see no reason to be more optimistic than them." Excluding the Z10 writedown and restructuring costs, BlackBerry reported a loss of $248 million, or 47 cents a share. The company plans to shed 4,500 jobs, or more than one-third of its workforce, as it shrinks to focus on corporate and government customers. It will not host the typical post-results call for investors after signing a tentative $9-a-share agreement to be acquired by a consortium led by Fairfax Financial, its largest shareholder, Monday. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company's steep revenue decline and mounting losses have revived fears that BlackBerry, a pioneer in the smartphone sector, faces an ignominious death. "We are very disappointed with our operational and financial results this quarter and have announced a series of major changes to address the competitive hardware environment and our cost structure," Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins said in the earnings statement. BlackBerry said Heins wasn't available for an interview. The company said it

Resolute Forest Products (RFP), formerly known as AbitibiBowater, entered into bankruptcy in early 2009, weighed down by roughly $6 billion in debt.

  • [By Saibus Research]

Consolidation has been incremental in the paper and forest products industry. In May 2012, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) (formerly AbitibiBowater) announced that it had acquired 50.1% of Fibrek and acquired the remaining 49.9% in August. 2011 saw International Paper (IP) announce a hostile takeover of Temple-Inland and after offering $32/share in cash as well as the assumption of $600M of TIN's debt, IP was able to close the deal in February 2012. 2011 also saw Rock-Tenn (RKT) acquire Smurfit-Stone to create the number two player in the linerboard segment with 20% market share, trailing only International Paper's 40%. We see these moves as a prudent step to consolidation in the industry as certain types of paper such as newsprint and uncoated free sheet (office paper) are seeing falling demand due to increased use of digital resources.

  • [By Vanina Egea] ong>Risks and Valuation

Although the Chinese government will maintain its gambling restrictions in the mainland over the next decade, Sand Corp market share and leverage in fixed costs will continue to riel in strong revenue growth from this region. Fiscal 2013 marked a 24.80% revenue increase ($13.8 billion) and operating margins continue to expand at the same pace. Despite the inherent risk of an economic slowdown in Asia or a recession in the U.S., which could put a halt to leisure spending, the company is well prepared to balance out any short-term losses. The casino operator EBITDA growth of 65.30%, for example, is an impressive result when compared to the industry average of 4.90%.

Looking forward, earnings per share are expected to continue their fast-paced upward trend, having jumped from $1.56 in 2011 to $2.79 at the end of fiscal 2013. The 21.6% return on equity, as well as 1.80% dividend yield should also be attractive to shareholders and future investors. Although Las Vegas Sand Corp is currently trading at a 24% price premium relative to the industry average of 22.60x trailing earnings, I feel very bullish about this firm long term profitability, given its strong market position in Asia.

In 2010 Brazil HRT Participacoes em Petroleo S.A. (HRTPY.PK) raised $1.5 billion in an IPO to fund a highly touted and highly expensive oil & gas exploration campaign in both the Amazon and offshore Namibia. Management was very promotional and overpromised and underdelivered. The three exploration wells in Namibia were all failures and the Conclusion of Solimoes Gas Monetization Study leads the market (myself included) to conclude that there is little or no present value in the discoveries in the Solimoes basin. The stock has lost 85% in just the last year, and over 97% in the last three years. Early investors like Southeastern Asset Management have lost most of their money and have either given up or believe the market cap has become too small and insignificant to warrant further examination.

Take a look at some of the investments that give millions of investors indirect exposure to Apple stock:

The widely held SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY  ) , with $130 billion in assets under management, has a 2.6% allocation to Apple. Put another way, the ETF owns 8.8 million shares of Apple stock, representing almost 1% of the tech giant's total outstanding shares. The tech-tracking PowerShares QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) tracks the much less inclusive Nasdaq 100 index, which includes the largest non-financial companies traded on the Nasdaq exchange. There, Apple has an 11% allocation, with the ETF owning more than 9.3 million shares of Apple stock. Think of it this way: For every 100 shares of the ETF you own, you indirectly own almost two shares of Apple, along with shares of dozens of other companies. Among index mutual funds, the story is much the same. The Vanguard 500 Index (NASDAQMUTFUND: VFINX  ) owns 8.9 million shares of Apple, representing an almost 3% weighting in the S&P 500-tracking fund. The Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (NASDAQMUTFUND: VTSMX  ) , meanwhile, is the biggest fund owner of Apple stock, with 13.1 million shares held.

Nor are these funds particularly unusual. Overall, Apple is one of the favorite holdings among institutional investors. Yahoo! Finance reports that almost 2,000 different institutions own Apple shares, with giants like State Street, Fidelity, BlackRock, and JPMorgan Chase among the top institutional holders of Apple stock.

No matter what happens in the last two weeks of the year, 2013 will clearly stand out as a buy-and-hold year with index funds as the star performers. The iShares Russell 2000 Index (IWM) is currently up 34.1% YTD, followed closely by the 33% gain in the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ).

The government Friday reported that the unemployment rate was 7.6% in May, but I dispute that for two critical reasons. When incorporating underemployed Americans into the count, and when accounting for the 7.26 million Americans I estimate are missing from the labor force count due to their very long-term joblessness, the real unemployment rate could be as high as 17.6%, and is probably at least 11.7%. Thus, the economy is not as healthy as one might hope based on the government's account. It is also greatly dependent on the Federal Reserve's synthetic aid and is highly vulnerable in its current state. So, considering this, I have to wonder if America understood the current state of affairs, would the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY), SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) and the PowerShares QQQ (QQQ) each be up in the mid-teens year to date?

    Investment Implications
The Fed's desire to taper their bond purchases is concerning and something that we will monitor closely. However, the known desire to taper has not yet shown up in the credit markets in the form of risk aversion as it did in 2007 and 2011 prior to sharp declines in stocks. As long as that is the case, we will continue to favor stocks (SPY) over bonds (AGG). We will also hold our positions in leading sectors such as financials (XLF), technology (QQQ), and small caps (IWM). If the messages from the markets change, we are happy to migrate toward a more conservative stance.

Hot India Stocks To Watch Right Now

Given that the company's troubles in China are very well known now, there's not much for Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM), or its shareholders, to do but wait for things to get better. The company continues to look for growth in other emerging markets, while driving good profits from its U.S. operations, but it's going to take a while for markets like India, Russia, or Africa to make a difference relative to China. In the meantime, the shares don't look like that much of a bargain.

Sluggish Sales For The Second Quarter
Revenue came in for the second quarter more or less as expected, which is not too surprising given the periodic updates that the company provides along the way. That said, I wouldn't recommend overlooking the absolute performance just because the relative performance looked okay.

Overall company revenue rose 6% for the quarter, but the same-store trends were pretty soft across the board. Same-store sales were up 1% in the U.S. against a tough comp, with Taco Bell and KFC showing gains of 2% and 3% respectively (Pizza Hut was down 2%). China same-store sales were down 20% as previously announced, with KFC down 26% and Pizza Hut up 7%. India same-store sales were up 2%, while International same-store sales were up only 1%, as emerging market growth of 5% was offset by a 1% decline in developed markets.

Shares of Infosys Ltd (INFY) spiked in pre-market trading on Friday after the software company posted second quarter earnings and revenues that beat Wall Street expectations.

The India-based company posted a second quarter net income of $383 million, or 67 cents per share, down from $431 million, or 75 cents per share, posted in the same period last year.

The company’s earnings per American Depository Share, or ADR, came in at 73 cents per share. According to analysts at Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn 70 cents per share in the quarter.

Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.
Indian stocks suffered from some of the same macroeconomic issues, with the Bombay market's index down about 3% and ETF tracking the market falling 4% to 5%. The Indian finance minister responded to the decline, which many blamed on Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's comments, by saying, "We think that Bernanke's statement has been misunderstood or misinterpreted." Yet that didn't seem to appease investors in outward-directed industries like Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) , whose IT offerings require health activity levels not just in India but in the U.S. and other customer-heavy countries as well.
Stocks in Mexico suffered declines of almost 5%, retracing some ground after an extraordinarily strong stretch of gains on optimism about the country's ability to reinvigorate its economy beyond its core reliance on petroleum and to resolve ongoing conflicts with drug cartels.

But there were some relatively bright spots in other emerging markets. Brazilian stocks were actually up a bit on the week, as the nation found itself better insulated from all the happenings in Asia related to China and Japan. Russian stocks also remained relatively stable,
