Thanks to the prolific rise of smartphones and tablets, the writing has been on the wall for PC makers for quite some time. It's gotten to the point where Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) has completely shifted its long-term strategy toward gaining significant market share in mobile computing. To that end, Intel Haswell was born, the company's fourth-generation "Core" family processor.

A promising place to seek dividend contenders for your portfolio is the index of Dividend Achievers, which are companies that have hiked their dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. One company on the list, for example, is Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , which is yielding about 4% recently, and has been raising its payout by about 12% annually over the past five years, on average. It, too, has struggled a bit lately, but it's healthy, with deep pockets, and has been moving into the rapidly growing mobile arena.

  • [By Steve Heller]

Last week, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) announced that its revenue declined by 5.1% year over year in its second quarter, which translated to net income decline of 29%. But what got investors spooked was that Chipzilla lowered its full-year revenue outlook, which it now expects will remain flat compared to last year. As you can imagine, Intel is in a similar predicament as Microsoft, but instead of licenses, its processor business is expected to face revenue pressure as it enters the tablet and lower end computing segment with its upcoming Bay Trail processor. Consequently, Intel's profitability will be lower on a per unit and total dollar basis even with constant profit margins.

[Sears Canada is also] seeing or about to see a wave of fresh competition from Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) and Target’s (TGT) recent northern expansions to Nordstrom’s (JWN) upcoming launch. The company still operates 24.8 million square feet of retail space, but only 14 full-line department stores are company-owned and as we mentioned above, much of the best real estate has been sold. Yes, Sears Canada has a net cash position, but we expect Sears Holdings to take as much cash as they can beforehand in the event of any sale or spin-off.

As brick-and-mortar retailers continue to look for ways to level the playing field in terms of customers' datarelative to their online brethren like Amazon.com, they're experimenting with an increasing number of technologies. Hot Electric Utility Companies To Own For 2014

LONDON -- Stock index futures at 7 a.m. EDT indicate that the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) may open 0.36% higher this morning, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) may open up by 0.4%. Both indexes closed sharply lower yesterday after weaker-than-expected economic data dented investor sentiment and led to a big drop for the CNN Fear & Greed Index, which closed down 13 points at 58.

This morning's trading is likely to be influenced by the Japanese central bank's surprise decision to accelerate its bond-buying program and double its monetary base in the next two years. The Bank of Japan said it would expand its balance sheet from $1.43 trillion to $2.86 trillion by March 2015 by doubling its asset purchases, the majority of which will be long-term government bonds. The bank is targeting inflation of 2% to kick-start growth after years of deflation.

In Europe, markets rose ahead of the European Central Bank announcement due later today, although the ECB is expected to leave interest rates unchanged. The eurozone service sector continued to contract in March, according to the Markit eurozone services PMI, which fell to 46.4 in March from 47.9 in February, indicating that the rate of contraction is increasing. In London, the FTSE 100 was 0.17% lower at the time of writing following the Bank of England's announcement that it would leave both interest rates and its asset purchase program unchanged this month.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jim Royal]

I'm about to buy shares in Investors Bancorp (NASDAQ: ISBC  ) , a soon-to-demutualize thrift that is undervalued. The thrift has quickly grown assets since it went public in 2005 and, with improving credit metrics and a solid return on equity, the bank is ready to make the final leap to full public ownership. So my Special Situations portfolio will acquire shares shortly. Here's why I like the stock.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

He also pointed out that the approaching completion of Roma Financial (ROMA) and Investors Bancorp (ISBC) has some interesting implications for bank stock investors. Both are mutual holding companies, and the newly formed bank is expected to complete the process and do a second-step conversion offering. That will be a fairly large deal, much larger than most second-step offerings, as the combined banks should be somewhere around $3 billion in market cap. There will be larger investment banks involved, complete with road shows and institutional meetings to promote the deal. The attention could well cause a revaluation of the mutual holding company and converted thrift sector of the banking market.

Assa Abloy AB is a Sweden-based company engaged in the secure door opening solutions. It is organized into five divisions: Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), North and South America (Americas), Asia, Australia and New Zealand (Asia Pacific), Global Technologies and Entrance Systems. The EMEA, Americas and Asia Pacific divisions manufacture mechanical and electromechanical locks, security doors and hardware in their respective geographical markets. The Global Technologies division operates in the product areas of access control systems, secure card issuance, identification technology and hotel locks. The Entrance Systems division is a supplier of entrance automation products and services. The Company subsidiaries include ASSA Sverige AB, Timelox AB and ABLOY Holdings Ltd., among others. In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa remains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

  • [By Mike Arnold]

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.
