Top Sliver Companies For 2014

A month ago, I wrote that the upside breakout was confirmed. Since then, the breakout level (roughly 1,840 on the Standard & Poor 500 Index) was tested twice and held both times.

Now the S&P 500 index (SPX) has moved to new highs once again, both on an intraday and a closing basis (the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is about to do the same). Those highs were confirmed by consecutive closes yesterday and today.

Moreover, the overbought conditions that existed have been alleviated, for the most part, by the sideways action over the past month. Along the way, two important systematic buy signals have been registered, which bolsters the bullish case.

    The not-so-great and wonderful OCZ
There was no company-specific news that caused solid-state-drive maker OCZ Technology (NASDAQ: OCZ  ) to fall almost 8% Wednesday. But an article that appeared on Seeking Alpha questioning whether the company had six months or less to live before it filed for bankruptcy seemed to coincide with its fall.

The company was founded in 1972 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jim Jubak]

At $1300 an ounce, Goldcorp's assumed price of gold is still significantly above the $1140 at Barrick Gold (ABX) or the $1,200 an ounce at Kinross Gold (KGC). I expect that Yamana Gold AUY, set to report on February 18, which already used a price assumption below $1300 an ounce, will reduce its price assumption even further. That leaves plenty of room for another reduction in reserves at Goldcorp on a lower assumed price. Gold closed at $1273 an ounce on average in the fourth quarter of 2013, 4% lower than in the third quarter and 26% less than in the fourth quarter of 2012.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Of course, not all of Barrick's problems are of its own making. Other major miners, such as Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) , Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) , and BHP Billiton, are selling mines or considering doing so to shore up finances and concentrate on core operations. And gold has been in a rut that's caused some of the best miners fromYamana Gold (NYSE: AUY  ) to Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) to lose 25% or more of their value in the past month. A week ago, gold suffered its largest one-day drop in three decades.

In this installment of Investor Beat, Motley Fool analysts Jason Moser and Matt Koppenheffer discuss four stocks making big moves.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

At pivot points, gold prices can be highly volatile, but this is often where the greatest opportunities exist. The shift to physical gold is an important one because, while the "gold market" is fairly large, there are limited quantities of bullion. This is one of the reasons that miners like Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) have also rebounded somewhat. Since the slide, Barrick is up over 9% and Kinross is up over 13%. In that same period, the GLD is up less than 6%.

DETROIT UPS driver Tom Camp and his big, brown truck have done something no other UPS driver has accomplished: 51 years without an accident.

That's after an estimated 800,000 to 900,000 miles on the road in metro Detroit, ringing doorbells in Detroit and western Wayne County since 1962, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The next-safest UPS driver retired in 2012 in Dayton, Ohio, after 50 years, the only other UPS driver to achieve 50 years accident-free. The company has 6,486 drivers out of 65,000 in the United States and 100,000 globally who have 25 years or more without an accident, earning them a plaque and a place in the UPS Circle of Honor. Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. Our portfolios that focus on corporate restructuring (Keeley Small Cap Value, Keeley Small-Mid Cap Value, Keeley Mid Cap Value, Keeley All Cap Value, and Keeley Alternative Value) have all experienced a productive investment cycle with respect to their opportunity sets, and many of our holdings have posted impressive results in recent quarters. Another under-$10 stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Penn West Petroleum (PWE), which is engaged in the business of acquiring, exploring, developing, exploiting and holding interests in petroleum and natural gas properties and related assets. This stock has been under pressure by the bears during the last three months, with shares off by 24%.

If you take a look at the chart for Penn West Petroleum, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways over the last two months, with shares moving between $7.89 on the downside and $8.84 on the upside. Shares of PWE are now starting to spike higher above its recent low of $8.14 a share and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PWE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.84 a share to its 50-day moving average of $8.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.43 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then PWE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $10.07 to $11 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give PWE a chance to tag $11.50 to $12 a share.

Traders can look to buy PWE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $8.14 a share or at $7.89 a share. One can also buy PWE off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

The biggest worry that some investors have about Pengrowth is that its dividend is large compared to its earnings. Similar issues forced Penn West Petroleum (NYSE: PWE  ) , also a former Canroy, to cut its dividend a couple months ago. Although extraordinary measures have helped Pengrowth and Enerplus (NYSE: ERF  ) sustain payouts at levels that were last reduced in the middle of 2012, both companies could eventually see further pressure on their payouts in future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil and natural gas producer Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) likes to go against the grain. While most of its peers have been focused on acquiring or developing oil-rich assets, Vanguard has been shopping in the clearance isle and stocking up on natural gas. It's a move that could pay off handsomely in a couple of years as the supply and demand balance for natural gas begins to shift.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Oil and gas producer, Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) is out with its first-quarter earnings. The company, known for its monthly distribution to investors, is one of a growing number of oil and gas production companies structured as an MLP/LLC. This makes the high yielder a favorite of income-starved investors. Let's take a quick look to ensure that income won't be drying up anytime soon.

The only other option to fund these capital needs is to form foreign joint ventures, which could jeopardize our dream of energy independence, or simply unload mature oil and gas assets. That last option has opened up a hidden opportunity for upstream oil and gas MLPs such as LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) andVanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) to consolidate these mature producing properties.

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

An obvious place to start is coal's biggest competitor, natural gas. For a while now, I've been a fan of the natural gas compression company, Exterran Holdings (NYSE: EXH  ) , which provides operations, maintenance, service, and equipment for both oil and natural gas production. Exterran's stock has had a steady climb the last couple of years -- it's up over 40% this year alone. The majority of analysts are calling Exterran a hold, but several rate it a buy or even a strong buy. Currently, Exterran is trading in the upper $20 range, and with a price target of $33, it still seems to have some upside. And for those interested in investing in master limited partnerships, Exterran operates an MLP as well, Exterran Partners (NASDAQ: EXLP  ) , which has seen a 33% gain in its price this year.

Hot Value Companies To Invest In Right Now

LONDON British drug maker AstraZeneca rejected Monday what its New York-based rival Pfizer called over the weekend its "final" takeover offer.

In a statement, AstraZeneca's board cited the "uncertainty and risks" for shareholders as a reason for the rejection, which came just hours after the maker of the erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra had upped the value of its bid to 55 pounds (around $93) a share in a deal that would have led to the world's largest drugs company.

Pfizer's latest bid that came Sunday night valued AstraZeneca at around $116 billion. It said the new offer would be its final one.

"Pfizer's approach throughout its pursuit of AstraZeneca appears to have been fundamentally driven by the corporate financial benefits to its shareholders of cost savings and tax minimization," Leif Johansson, AstraZeneca's chairman, said Monday.

Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

The company's January 10 announcement that it was lowering its guidance for the fourth quarter on declines in drilling activity in North America and Europe/Africa/Russia, has certainly contributed to weakness in the oil services sector and in the shares of competitors such as Schlumberger (SLB). With Schlumberger scheduled to report fourth quarter earnings on January 17, and with Baker Hughes scheduled for January 21, the question now is, as the lowered guidance from Baker Hughes de-risked the stocks in the sector or will there be enough disappointment in the actual reports to push the sector down farther?/p>

5 Best Dow Dividend Stocks To Invest In 2014

Do you have enough money in your 401(k)? I have a formula that answers that question. You may not like the answer.

The formula was created a year ago by some financial industry experts; there more on their methodology in this article.

Here the bottom line, in tabular form:

Source: Fidelity Investments

If youe making $100,000 and youe 35, you should have $100,000 saved up in your thrift plan, IRA or other retirement pot. Ten years later, you should have $300,000.

This is the savings trajectory you are supposed to be on. Stick with it and youl have a comfortable retirement, defined here to mean a steady income equal to 85% of your pretax pay when you were working. The income in question includes Social Security payments.

Do most people have anything like these amounts? No, which is one of the three reasons why John Bogle, the founder of Vanguard, is talking about a coming rain wreckfor retirees (the other two problems: the underfunding of traditional pension plans and the insolvency of Social Security).

United's high cost structure might be manageable if it could sustain a revenue premium against competitors like Delta and AMR (NASDAQOTH: AAMRQ  ) . However, United was the worst airline in the U.S. according to most customer service metrics in 2012, destroying customer goodwill. Unless the company can make a miraculous turnaround and justify higher fares than competitors, United's high cost structure will doom it to mediocrity in the long run.
