Top 5 Retail Stocks To Own For 2015

The recent restructuring announcement from this energy giant had little effect on the company's stock, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks, who thinks many investors are waiting for all the details.

General Electric (GE) has announced that it will exit the part of GE Capital that provides store credit cards at retailers in North America, beginning in the first half of 2014. The exit will begin with the initial public offering of a 20% piece of the North American retail finance business. General Electric will hold the remaining 80% of shares from that IPO until 2015. At that point, the company will swap its shares in the retail finance business for shares of General Electric. The cash raised in the IPO will stay with the retail finance business to support that business. The company said it will take a $500 million restructuring charge for this, ahem, restructuring.

What's amazing to me, is how little negative effect this announcement has had on General Electric's shares, given the complexity of the plan, and given widespread assumptions/wishes that General Electric would move more quickly to shrink GE Capital. The stock, at its December 12 close of $26.54, is down, only fractionally, from the $27.22 closing high on November 18 and the near-high of $27.19 on December 9.

We certainly saw some tailcoat-riding in the discount retail sector, with Family Dollar Stores (NYSE: FDO  ) and Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) leading the way with gains of 7.1% and 5.8%, respectively. The story here relates to Family Dollar's better-than-expected third-quarter results, which delivered a 9% increase in revenue to $2.57 billion and $1.05 in EPS, $0.03 more than the Street expected. More impressively, gross margin rose 560 basis points, with its consumables segment sales up nearly 15%. Family Dollar also tightened its fourth-quarter EPS guidance a bit, to a range of $0.82-$0.87 from $0.85-$0.95, and in line with the Street's expectation of $0.85.

Family Dollar Stores Inc. (NYSE: FDO) is rated Underperform by Sterne Agee primarily because it believes the store will slow down its new store openings starting in 2015. The analysts point out that same-store sales have been under pressure and there is some question about the strength of the store brand. The Sterne Agee price target on the stock is $56.00 and, like Kohl, the shares are overvalued, but by a larger percentage — 12%. Estimated EPS for next year is down 2% and the forward multiple is 17.1.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has lost a modest 17 points in pre-market trading, suggesting a lower start to the stock market today. Stocks could take a breather after logging their biggest daily gain in over a month yesterday. Still, Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD  ) , Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) , and Pier 1 Imports (NYSE: PIR  ) were all on the move in pre-market trading after posting quarterly earnings results.

Brendan: Not a problem at all. What about the surprising amount of dollar-store companies that are public? You have Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) , Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) , Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) . You mention, in particular, Family Dollar, which is the lowest market cap out of all of those, as doing the best, an exceptional company. Why?

It's tragic that it took a tragedy like last year's shooting at a Newton, Connecticut elementary school to get the ball rolling. Nevertheless, that ball is rolling now, and it's putting companies like L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LLL), View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) in the spotlight. How so? Because VSYM, ASEI, and LLL make the tools that are, unfortunately, going to be the only way to absolutely ensure this nation's public schools are secure, and defended from gunmen like Newton's Adam Lanza.

The Department of Defense issued $1.3 billion worth of new contract awards Friday. However, a single, $950 million award for engineering services accounted for the bulk of the spending -- and that one went to a series of privately held companies. Publicly traded names fared less well. Among the few winners:

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, outside the Dow, Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN  ) has spiked 13% following an upgrade by analyst Deutsche Bank, which believes Groupon's mobile app should help the company see improvement in its coupon use. This stock price jump is surprising, given that most investors had thought daily deals and coupons were largely a fad whose time had already passed, but if Groupon can make its offerings more mobile-friendly, then it might be able to reinvigorate the relatively dormant niche.
