Top Performing Stocks To Buy Right Now

I have searched for highly profitable companies that pay very rich dividends and that are in a short-term uptrend and in a mid-term uptrend. Stocks in an uptrend are performing well and are in a buying mode. Those stocks would also have to show a very low trailing and forward P/E ratio.

I have elaborated a screening method, which shows stock candidates following these lines. Nonetheless, the screening method should only serve as a basis for further research. All the data for this article were taken from Yahoo Finance and finviz.com. The screen's formula requires all stocks to comply with all following demands:

The forward dividend yield is greater than 3.90%. The payout ratio is less than 85%. Trailing P/E is less than 12. Forward P/E is less than 12. The stock price is above the 20-day simple moving average (short-term uptrend). The stock price is above the 50-day simple moving average (mid-term uptrend).

After running this screen on August 16, 2013, before the market open, I discovered the following four stocks:

Once again, MedAssets trades below its industry average valuation of 62.1 x P/E, at 49.3x. Its valuation becomes even more attractive when one looks at the company麓s P/B ratio (2.8x vs. an industry average of 15.6x) and P/S ratio (2.0x vs. 4.7x). However, below average margins, returns and growth projections are three major sources of concern.

    Unifi (UFI)

Finally, there’s Unifi (UFI), a $421 million market cap diversified producer and processor of multi-filament polyester and nylon yarns.

Small cap debt collection stocks likeAsta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week thatbefore it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small capdebt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

Pharmaceutical companies are getting into the act. For example, Vivus (NASDAQ: VVUS  ) recently introduced an app for iPhones (and Android phones) that complements its weight-loss drug. The app allows patients to record what they eat and track their weight plus receive regular information updates.

BigBrain could also lead to future obesity treatments. Several studies have shown that deep brain stimulation, via surgically implanted electrodes, can result in weight-loss in lab animals. It works by disrupting the brain's habit circuitry. Similar procedures have actually been performed on humans with alcoholism to alter the neurological pathways responsible to addiction. You may feel more comfortable taking an oral therapy, such as Belviq from Arena Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ARNA  ) or Qsymia from VIVUS (NASDAQ: VVUS  ) , than having your cranium cracked open. That is understandable. Both Belviq and Qsymia work to chemically subdue appetite pathways, such as serotonin 2C receptors. Implanted electrodes would work in a similar fashion, albeit in a more permanent way. Will Arena or VIVUS be marketing deep brain stimulation therapy for obesity in 20 years? Perhaps, but they need to figure out how to successfully market their oral therapies first.

Vivus is a biopharmaceutical company that is attacking issues negatively affecting many Americans. The stock has not done too well lately but may be currently stabilizing from a recent rise in selling. Earnings have been decreasing over the last four quarters, which has not really made investors too happy. Relative to its peers and sector, Vivus has trailed significantly in year-to-date performance. STAY AWAY from Vivus’s stock for now.

Advisors' Opinion:

Obviously, the big news for Smithfield during the quarter came from Shuanghui International's offer to buy out the company for $34 per share. The $4.7 billion offer has raised some nationalistic concerns, as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. will have to approve the merger, but Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said last month when the deal was announced that it believes the deal won't have an effect on the company's operations. In fact, the combination of China's largest meat processor and the world's biggest pork producer could produce a formidable opponent to industry rivals. In particular, Chinese pork producer Zhongpin (NASDAQ: HOGS  ) will inevitably find itself under pressure if the deal goes through, as Shuanghui puts itself in a stronger competitive position in the industry.
