LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks have ended with losses in every session this week, and sure enough, the Nikkei Average (JP:NIK) was down 0.6% in early Friday trade, though off an opening 0.8% defecit, while the Topix carried a 0.7% loss. Overnight losses for the U.S. and further strength in the yen (with the dollar falling to 楼101.28 from 楼101.56 a day earlier) helped drag the market lower, as did results from Fast Retailing Co. (JP:9983) (FRCOF) , the shares of which hold the heaviest weighting on Nikkei Average. Fast Retailing said that while its Uniqlo brand was doing great business, weakness for its J Brand luxury demin label helped send September-May profit down 4% and prompted another cut to Fast's full-year outlook. Consequently, its shares traded 0.7% lower, though rivals Takashimaya Co. (JP:8233) and J. Front Retailing Co. (JP:3086) (JFROF) also saw losses of 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively. (JP:6758) (SNE) , however, followed with a 4% rise, also possibly buoyed by a Nikkei Asian Review report that it was planning a "smartphone offensive" in the U.S. and China. Canon Inc. "Given the strong gains in labor market activity, along with other indications of strengthening domestic growth momentum, we expect this slowdown to be short-lived and we look for consumer spending to rebound strongly in the coming months," said Millan Mulraine, deputy chief economist at TD Securities in New York. Economists had forecast sales, which account for a third of consumer spending, increasing 0.2 percent last month. The economy has experienced six consecutive months of job growth above 200,000. Layoffs and job openings are back to their pre-recession levels. Data on manufacturing and services sectors have suggested the economy was growing solidly. Still, the pause in retail sales could give the Federal Reserve ammunition to maintain its very easy monetary policy stance for a while. The U.S. central bank has kept its benchmark overnight interest rate near zero since December 2008. "It will provide Fed Chair Janet Yellen with some of the rationale she needs to justify why the Fed should move gradually and keep interest rates low for longer than hawks within the Fed would like," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial in Chicago. Separately, retailer Macy's (M) cut its full-year same-stores sales forecast after second-quarter sales fell short of expectations, another cloud over the retail sector. Macy's shares fell more than 5 percent, while shares of retailers Tiffany (TIF), Kohl's (KSS) and Nordstrom (JWN) also were down sharply. The S&P retail index was up at midday, but lagged the broader stock index, which was trading higher as tensions in Ukraine and Iraq eased. Home furnishing companies are usually a good short-term play as spring starts to bloom.

That all good news for home furnishing companies, which tend to see revenues rise as the ice melts and opening day beckons across U.S. ball fields.

But there is one home furnishings provider that really stands out in the crowd this week, in the key first week of April.

It Restoration Hardware Holdings (NYSE: RH), and not only are its short-term financial prospects looking as solid as a granite countertop, its long-term prospects look equally strong.

That spells opportunity for investors, so let dig a little deeper and examine why.

RH bills itself as a retailer of home furnishings, providing bedroom, dining, upholstery, home office, and media furniture products. It also offers cabinets; ceiling, table, floor, wall, and outdoor lighting products; textiles, such as bed linens, bath linens, drapery, rugs, and pillows and throws; and bath ware products comprising faucets, hardware, furniture, and sinks.

That pretty much covers the home furnishings product line from A-to-Z.

The firm has 71 retail stores, and 13 outlet stores across the U.S., but it also makes a lot of hay selling items through its catalog and web site outlets. The company chief competitors include Pier 1 Imports (NYSE: PIR) and Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM).

Financially, investors might have reservations about RH, at first blush. Q4 revenue figures came in slightly less than analysts had forecast ($471 million versus $491 million), but most investors evidently wrote-off the missed forecast due to the historically icy, frosty, snowy, and chilly months of December and January.
