Hot Dow Dividend Companies To Watch In Right Now

With the results in hand from Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and refiners like Valero (NYSE:VLO) the big surprise for the second quarter would have been if Chevron (NYSE: CVX) had posted a good quarter in refining. Chevron didn't do so, and the company's performance in the upstream E&P business was also a little light. Coupled with a somewhat higher capex spend this quarter, it was a pretty lahreport for this international energy major. By the same token, given that growth isn't going to really change much until Gorgon gets going (around 2015), it's not a story-changing quarter and Chevron continues to look like a decent pick in the major energy space.

Refining Hits Another Energy Company's Quarter
The U.S. refining business was a tough one in the second quarter, and it has hit the results of more than one company so far. With that (and some underperformance in the upstream business as well), Chevron missed the average analyst estimate for the quarter.

Revenue was down 8% for the quarter, with pre-tax income down 30%, but those are seldom the numbers that investors follow with companies like Chevron and Exxon.

Peregrine Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: PSMI) is a lesser known name that is a top stock to buy at Deutsche Bank. The company recently released a new radio frequency (RF) switch specifically designed for broadband cable systems. With HD content exploding, this could be a huge home run for the company. Deutsche Bank has a $14 price target for the stock, the same as the consensus target.

Advisors' Opinion:

Get ready for rotten food stocks today. Dean Foods (DF) has fallen 11% to $13.50 after it met earnings expectations but said the first quarter of 2014 would be “difficult.” Annie’s (BNNY), meanwhile, has dropped 8.7% to $38.19 after it missed earnings forecasts and offered a disappointing 2014 outlook. ConAgra Foods (CAG) has declined 5.5% to $29.35, after it too cut its full year guidance.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Keith Speights]

Cerner's recent stock performance trounces that of other publicly traded companies, including Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX  ) , Greenway Medical (NYSE: GWAY  ) , and Quality Systems (NASDAQ: QSII  ) . Only athenahealth (NASDAQ: ATHN  ) gives Cerner a run for its money over the past year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

One big opportunity that Quality Systems will try to cash in on this year is the trend toward medical professionals switching their electronic-health-records vendors. With one survey showing that as many as 1-in-6 of every users wanting to make a change, the industry could go through a big upheaval. Unfortunately for Quality Systems, its customer rankings are relatively low, and it appears that rival athenahealth (NASDAQ: ATHN  ) could end up drawing business away from Quality Systems and peer Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX  ) based on their respective perceptions by customers.

  • [By Keith Speights]

As you might expect, large EHR systems vendors enthusiastically welcomed passage of HITECH. What company wouldn't enjoy having the government pay customers to buy its products and fine them if they didn't? Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX  ) reported total revenue of $548 million in the fiscal year ending in May 2009. At the end of 2012, the company's annual revenue topped $1.4 billion -- thanks in no small part to Uncle Sam.

Hot Dow Dividend Companies To Watch In Right Now: Texas Rare Earth Resources Corp (TRER.PK)

Texas Rare Earth Resources Corp., formerly Standard Silver Corporation, incorporated on July 29, 1970. a mining company engaged in the business of the acquisition and development of mineral properties. As of August 31, 2012, it held a nineteen year lease to explore and develop a 950 acre rare earth uranium-beryllium prospect located in Hudspeth County, Texas known as Round Top and prospecting permits covering an adjacent 9,345 acres.

The Company principal focus will be on developing a metallurgical process to concentrate or otherwise extract the metals from the Round Top rhyolite. In addition to the Round Top Project, the Company also own title to 12 unpatented mining claims, the Macho group, comprising 240 acres covering the Old Dude Mine, located in Sierra County, New Mexico. Another 18 unpatented mining claims and fractional claims, the HA group, consisting 274 acres cover an andesite hosted vein system similar to and some 10 miles to the southwest of the Macho District.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jake Mitchell]

As a speculative play on the industry, I came across Texas Rare Earth Resources (TRER.PK), which is principally focused on its 950 acre Round Top project. A Preliminary Economic Assessment by an independent third party found that there are an estimated over 1 billion metric tonnes of resources containing over 1 billion pounds of rare earth elements. A revised PEA, which was originally projected to have a capital cost of $2.1 billion is now estimated to be between $150 million to $350 million. A key concern in the exploration of these mines is how expensive it is to ultimately extract the rare earths from the ground. If Texas Rare Earth is able to show evidence that cost has been significantly reduced it will be the target of interested parties globally.
