Top 10 Japanese Companies To Invest In 2014

Last fall, a dispute between the governments of China and Japan over ownership of some islands touched off a wave of anti-Japanese feelings in China. Many Japanese brands that had seen huge growth in sales in recent years suddenly saw their sales numbers fall off a cliff.

The Japanese automakers weren't spared. Toyota (NYSE: TM  ) , Honda (NYSE: HMC  ) , and Nissan (NASDAQOTH: NSANY  ) all saw sales numbers fall sharply in September 2012 and they've stayed down since.

For Toyota in particular, this has been a challenge. The company had been striving to catch up to the China market leaders, General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) and Volkswagen (NASDAQOTH: VLKAY  ) , but now finds itself well behind in fact, it was just passed by up-and-coming Ford (NYSE: F  ) .

Advisors' Opinion:

RF Solutions certainly has potential, but I think the bulk of the growth and margin improvements will have to be led by Connected Solutions, and primarily the antenna business. I do believe the SCADA growth opportunity is real, and PCTEL could be looking at significant potential growth if leading automation companies like Siemens (SI) and Honeywell (HON) work PCTEL antennas into their process automation platforms. I likewise believe that WiFi and indoor wireless are real opportunities, though rivals like Laird (LARFF.PK) and CommScope could capture much of that for themselves.

Back in 2012, the FAA listed space tourism as a potential $1 billion industry in the next 10 years. Orbital is one company that will benefit from the vast amount of people wanted to venture outside of Earth. At the time of the FAA study, Virgin Galactic had already collected $60 million in deposits that cost $200,000 per person. Several public companies like Boeing (BA) and Honeywell (HON) also have subsidiaries or partnerships with space exploration companies as well. Orbital could actually become a buyout target if a large company wants to become more involved in this growth segment.

When China developed its so-called Golden Shield project that used technology to monitor, censor, and otherwise contain its citizens, U.S. companies that helped the government develop the program rightly came in for criticism.Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) provided the networking equipment critical to operating the vast, complicated surveillance system that was installed. Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) , United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) , General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) , and IBM were all there providing the repressive regime with the technology and know-how to keep its citizens in check.

The price of renting a car -- often the American traveler's transportation of choice -- has risen substantially in recent times. Ponying Up in Portland An August survey by CheapCarRental.net found that the average daily rate for the cheapest available rental car in many cities was much higher on a year-over-year basis. For example, the most expensive city was Portland, Oregon, with a $111 rate, while in the car manufacturing capital of the country, Detroit, it stood at $90, and in Denver it was $88. Rewinding one year, CheapCarRental's survey had a rate of $86 for Portland, $55 for Detroit and $65 for Denver. The blame can be laid at the feet of the major rental companies. Avis Budget Group (CAR), for example, in its most recently reported quarter, lifted its U.S. rates by around 4 percent, excluding its budget brand Payless and short-term rental subsidiary Zipcar. Such raises seem to be a habit for the company these days -- in the previous quarter, it advanced its U.S. pricing by 2 percent. Given that, it's no surprise that the company's revenue advanced 10 percent on a year-over-year basis to $2.2 billion in that most recent quarter, while net profit grew a robust 28 percent to $74 million. The other big publicly traded auto lender, Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ), saw a nearly 20 percent pop in revenue in its fiscal 2013, with top line rising to $10.8 billion. This, despite a heavy slate of recalls from the industry's big suppliers. So far in August alone, General Motors (GM) has recalled in excess of 380,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, in the same month, Ford (F) began the recall of 83,250 of its cars across several models. Fewer Cars in the Parking Lot Behind the higher bills and fatter profits is consolidation. With fewer competitors, of course, there's less pressure to offer attractive prices. Avis Budget Group gets half its name from the Budget chain, acquired in 2002. Also under its spreading wing are more recent acquisitions Zipcar and another (relatively

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."
